High tenacity and high modulus PE fiber, also called the Ultra High Molecular Werth
PE (UHMWPE) fiber, is a kind of high technology and high performance fiber born
at the beginning of the 1990s.
As one of the world's three high technology fibers (carbon fiber, aramid fiber, high
tenacity and high moulded PE fiber), UHMWPE fiber's tenacity is the highest
in all fibers with its high molecular weight, high interlinking, high degree of
orientation and high crystallinity. Its tenacity is 15 times to high quality steel
and 10 times to normal chemical fiber. This fiber also has the characteristics
of low density, high modulus, UV resistance, corrosion resistance, outstanding
anti-impact and anti-incision.
It also can be widely used in national defense weaponry, such as light weight and
high performance bulletproof plates, bulletproof helmets, soft bulletproof vests
and anti-thrust vests. Other applicative fields are composite materials for aviation,
spaceflight, ocean shipping, ropes for navy vessel, tow nets for ocean halieutics,
anti-storm woven nets, sports equipment and construction reinforcement
composite materials.
At present, there are only the DSM (Holland), HONEYWELL (the USA), SANSEI (Japan)
can produce this fiber and all of these three's annual output are only 4,500MT.
Since the 1990s, this fiber was stipulated by the Coordinating Committee about
the blockage of the techniques and technology. The products couldn't be sold to
Socialist countries for national defense applications.
